G. K. Chesterton A Short History of England by Chesterton, History, Europe, Great Britain

Filled with Chestertonian wit, the fast-moving history includes such gemlike observations as, Henry VIII "was almost as unlucky in his wives as they were in their husband." Of the great late Victorian/Edwardian trio of wits: George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and Chesterton himself, it is Chesterton whose body of work -- writing in an unassuming manner, without great pretension -- may well persist for future generations far longer than its charming, genial author ever imagined.

G. K. Chesterton Orthodoxy

"G. K. Chesterton routinely ignites more ideas per page than any Christian author of the twentieth century, with the possible exception of C. S. Lewis. Chesterton sometimes overstates, often maddens, and invariably provokes a new and better way of seeing things. In this book, he offers us new ways of seeing the greatest things of all: divine things of the gospel." -John G. Stackhouse, Jr.

G. K. Chesterton, Гилберт Честертон A Short History of England - Chesterton

Chesterton has been called the Prince of Paradox. His works include journalism, philosophy, poetry, biography, fantasy and detective stories. Chesterton says he decided to write this work because up till now no one has written a history that shows the populace in a favorable light. Most histories depict the people of a country as ignorant or in most instances wrong. Chesterton hoped to right this wrong.

G. K. Chesterton The Everlasting Man

'The Everlasting Man' is one of G. K. Chesterton's most respected works, a witty, imaginative and sincere attempt to justify the life of Jesus as a pivotal moment in the history of human spirituality. Dividing the book into two parts, Chesterton looks first at early 'cave men' and the ensuing development of pagan civilization, claiming that such societies effectively separated myth and philosophy. By contrast, in the second part of the book he demonstrates that, following the Crucifixion, these tendencies were successfully combined in the Christian religion. The result is a must-read ideological defence of Christianity, a book described by C. S. Lewis as among the most influential he had ever encountered.

In it, Chesterton presents an original view of Christian religion. G. K. Chesterton Orthodoxy

The wit and wisdom of Gilbert K. Chesterton continues to astonish new readers. Presented as his 'spiritual autobiography,' this monumental work shows just how clearly Mr. Chesterton anticipated future developments in philosophy as well as how Christianity would continue to resonate with individual seekers. Atheism, materialism, modernism... still lack the romance embodied in Christianity. This edition includes an index to help run down the memorable quotes you recall Chesterton said, but not where he said it.

G. K. Chesterton The Napoleon of Notting Hill by Chesterton, Fiction, Classics, Literary, Historical

The little man, whose name was Auberon Quin, had an appearance compounded of a baby and an owl. His round head, round eyes, seemed to have been designed by nature playfully with a pair of compasses. When he entered a room of strangers, they mistook him for a small boy, and they wanted to take him on their knees, until he spoke -- when they perceived that a boy would have been more intelligent! This is London, England -- yet a London, England, of a distant future when a great cosmopolitan civilization has taken control of the world -- and all is ruled by the King. Strangely, though, each new King of England is chosen from an official rotating list! And who is to be next?

G. K. Chesterton Heretics

2011 Reprint of 1905 Edition. This work was written as a companion to Chesterton's more famous work, "Orthodoxy'. In "Heretics", Chesterton makes the point that Westerners live in a world that celebrates rebels who step out of the norm and critique long held traditions and beliefs. In some cases, these rebels call attention to wrongs and abuses such as segregation and slavery, but there is a dark side to celebrating rebels. The ranks of those who rebel against traditional Christian beliefs grow increasingly vocal and proud of their defiance of God's Word. This is not a new phenomenon, but was noticed, documented, and critiqued in 1905 by G. K. Chesterton in his work "Heretics." The eccentric Englishman employs his biting wit to expose heretics as wrong and dangerous. Although over 100 years old, "Heretics" is remarkably relevant to today's culture. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position with Catholicism more and more, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius". Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, John Henry Cardinal Newman, and John Ruskin.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton Heretics and Orthodoxy

G. K. Chesterton's Heretics was first published in 1905, with Orthodoxy following in 1908. Chesterton viewed them as companions to one another, as Orthodoxy was written as a response to criticism he had received for Heretics. For while Heretics presents the negative view of Chesterton's beliefs, Orthodoxy presents the positive; in a sense, Heretics contains the anathemas while Orthodoxy contains the canons. Orthodoxy is therefore an apology, or defense, of the apostolic Christian faith as told through Chesterton's own journey to the faith. Chesterton wrote both while he was an Anglican, but he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922. This edition contains both Heretics and Orthodoxy while preserving Chesterton's original text (and British spelling conventions).

G. K. Chesterton St. Francis of Assisi

Francis of Assisi is, after Mary of Nazareth, perhaps the greatest saint in the Christian calendar, and one of the most influential men in the whole of human history. By universal acclaim, this biography by G. K. Chesterton is considered the best appreciation of Francis's life--the one that gets to the heart of the matter. For Chesterton, Francis is a great paradoxical figure, a man who loved women but vowed himself to chastity; an artist who loved the pleasures of the natural world as few have loved them, but vowed himself to the most austere poverty, stripping himself naked in the public square so all could see that he had renounced his worldly goods; a clown who stood on his head in order to see the world aright. Chesterton gives us Francis in his world-the riotously colorful world of the High Middle Ages, a world with more pageantry and romance than we have seen before or since. Here is the Francis who tried to end the Crusades by talking to the Saracens, and who interceded with the emperor on behalf of the birds. Here is the Francis who inspired a revolution in art that began with Giotto and a revolution in poetry that began with Dante. Here is the Francis who prayed and danced with pagan abandon, who talked to animals, who invented the creche.

G. K. Chesterton W Wrong with the World

What Is Wrong With The World is a remarkably perceptive analysis of social and moral issues by British novelist and critic G. K. Chesterton. Chesterton's style is light and humorous but also deadly serious and philosophical as he provides witty commentary on feminism, education, family, and other topics."I originally called this book "What is Wrong," and it would have satisfied your sardonic temper to note the number of social misunderstandings that arose from the use of the title. Many a mild lady visitor opened her eyes when I remarked casually, "I have been doing 'What is Wrong' all this morning." And one minister of religion moved quite sharply in his chair when I told him (as he understood it) that I had to run upstairs and do what was wrong, but should be down again in a minute."Gilbert Keith Chesterton was an English prolific and diverse writer whose subjects include philosophy, ontology, poetry, playwriting, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including detective fiction. G. K. Chesterton The Man Who Was Thursday, A Nightmare by Chesterton, Fiction, Classics

A WILD, MAD, HILARIOUS AND PROFOUNDLY MOVING TALE: It is very difficult to classify The Man Who was Thursday. It is possible to say that it is a gripping adventure story of murderous criminals and brilliant policemen; but it was to be expected that the author of the Father Brown stories should tell a detective story like no one else. On this level, therefore, The Man Who was Thursday succeeds superbly; if nothing else, it is a magnificent tour-de-force of suspense-writing. However, the reader will soon discover that it is much more than that. Carried along on the boisterous rush of the narrative by Chesterton's wonderful high-spirited style, he will soon see that he is being carried into much deeper waters than he had planned on; and the totally unforeseeable denouement will prove for the modern reader, as it has for thousands of others since 1908 when the book was first published, an inevitable and moving experience, as the investigators finally discover who Sunday is.

Gilbert K. Chesterton The Napoleon of Notting Hill

The Napoleon of Notting Hill is a novel written by G. K. Chesterton in 1904, set in a nearly unchanged London in 1984.Although the novel is set in the future, it is, in effect, set in an alternative reality of Chesterton's own period, with no advances in technology or changes in the class system or attitudes. It postulates an impersonal government, not described in any detail, but apparently content to operate through a figurehead king, randomly chosen. The dreary succession of randomly selected Kings of England is broken up when Auberon Quin, who cares for nothing but a good joke, is chosen. To amuse himself, he institutes elaborate costumes for the provosts of the districts of London. All are bored by the King's antics except for one earnest young man who takes the cry for regional pride seriously – Adam Wayne, the eponymous Napoleon of Notting Hill.Michael Collins, who led the fight for Irish independence from British Rule, is known to have admired the book. There has been speculation that the setting of the book prompted the date chosen for the setting of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. The novel is also quoted at the start of Neil Gaiman's novel Neverwhere. Both the novel and Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday are referenced in the 2000 video game Deus Ex.

G. K. Chesterton St. Francis of Assisi

2010 Reprint of 1923 Edition. In this brilliant reflection on the poor friar of Assisi, G.K. Chesterton unfolds the life and times of St. Francis, from his conversion as a young man to his receiving of the Stigmata at the end of his life. While many modern biographers stumble in their effort to grasp the essence of the saint, Chesterton shows that Francis' entire life, his prayer, his poverty, his asceticism, his love of creation, and all his eccentricities, flowed from his profound love for Christ and all men. In Chesterton's colorful prose, St. Francis shines with the splendor of sanctity and calls each of us to the same intense and animating love for God and His people.
